Celebration 2017: Legacy Project

Project Date: Aug. 15, 2017

Intro

Last summer, my friend Baraa, asked me if I would like to work with him on a project he had come upon, theĀ Celebration 2017: Legacy Project, which required students to develop plan to revamp the Arts Quad portion of campus.

The competition had three stages, a proposal phase, a semi-detailed plan phase, and a fully detailed plan phase. In each round, teams were to get eliminated such that round 2 would have 10 teams remaining, round 3 would have 4 teams remaining, and that after round 3 the judges would select one team to execute their plan.

My Role

My role as part of this team was to partake in the brainstorming sessions, and to create the renderings used to portray our ideas.

Our Ideas

Our team decided to revamp the Arts Quad by introducing three new features to the space: an “Ideas Start Here” gateway, a “Treeatre,” and glow-in-the-dark wayfinding path lines.

Map of proposed features.

“Ideas Start Here” gateway – Introduce this sign as a reflection of the i3 entrance gateway sign which would be used to welcome people to the Arts Quad. This would attract people to the area, which it is currently lacking and also presents the area as one in which they can freely express themselves. We presented 2 separate, but similar concepts.

“Treeatre” – One of the prominent features on the Arts Quad is the old oak tree. Many of the students found this tree to be aesthetically displeasing, especially in the colder months when it stands bare. In order to draw students towards the tree, it is proposed a wooden stage be built to provide students an area where they can program their events. As such speakers and lighting would be built in as well.

Glow-in-the-dark wayfinding path lines – Update the groundwork on site to create a consistent, coherent overall design for the quad. There is a need for pathways that are accessible to all audiences who use the space including those with low vision impairment. Additionally, these lines will act to guide people around the campus.

Results and Conclusion

Overall, our team made it to Stage 2 with 9 other teams. This was a good opportunity for me work on this type of project, a type I had not encountered in the past.
